Getting old is thing that happens. You don't always see it coming. One day it'll be you that wakes up, looks in the mirror and goes "who in the hell let this old person in the house".
But for now you are young. It's not a thing you worry about. This getting old thing. You worry about bills and work and friends and your life is busy busy busy.
In contrast your grandparents probably seem like they have all the time in the world. They don't.
Grandma's and grandpa's don't get to stay forever.
Someday the chair in the corner will be empty.
The garden will get choked by weeds.
Those famous rolls stop appearing on the table.
One day you will wake up and all of the days are gone.
I work with so many elderly that all they want is to be remembered.
"Did my son call today?"
"Check the mail I'm hoping for a Christmas card this year."
They watch the doors, and listen for the phone. They show me the same five pictures of their grandkids that are worn and tattered from being lovingly held.
Don't abandon the old ones who love you, because we don't get to keep them forever.
